What is banner advertising?
Banner advertising is a popular online form of advertising displayed on websites. The ads are displayed in a variety of rectangular forms using images or graphics vice text visual representation of information.
A banner advertisement is often referred to as a web banner, banner ad, banner advert, button ad, or other similar terms.
The banner ad comprises of two parts. The first is the image and the second part is the hypertext URL or website link. Associating a link with the image makes the banner interactive. When a viewer clicks on a banner, the viewer then sees the advertiser’s website displayed.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau, a trade organization, is responsible for the standardization of banner advertising and display sizes. The most popular displayed banner size is 468 pixels by 60 pixels (or 468 x 60). The following chart shows the standard banner ad sizes.

Webmasters and website owners monetize their websites by using some space on their webpages for displaying advertisers’ banners ads. They are paid by advertising companies based on specified performance criteria (impressions or clicks served).
Common Banner Terminology
Common banner ad terms are:
Impression – The displaying of a banner on a website.
Click – The physical click on a banner that triggers the display of the advertiser’s website.
Click Thru Rate (CTR) – is the ratio between clicks and impressions expressed as a percentage. For example, if a banner ad is displayed on websites 100 times, then that is counted as 100 impressions. If the banner is clicked 5 times out of the 100 impressions, the CTR is 5% (5 divided by 100 = .05 which is 5%).
The difference between impressions and clicks is important!
Because many banner advertising service providers charge advertisers by the number of impressions while others charge by the click.
How are banner ad services priced?
As an advertiser, you have several different options for getting banner ad services. They are free, pay by the impression, or pay per click.
Free Business Advertising – usually works on a “I will show yours if you show mine” basis. This is done either on a one on one link swap basis or through a banner exchange program. A banner exchange program displays advertiser banner ads in exchange for credits which are converted into ads to be displayed on other sites.
Pay by the impression – Banner ad service providers charge advertisers to display a specific number of impressions for a specific price. For example, one banner ad service provider will provide 1,000,000 impressions for $80.00. Sounds like a good deal? Maybe or maybe not.
Here is a 1,000,000 banner ad impression buy I made awhile back. My banner was displayed 1,000,000 times. I received 2,040 clicks (CTR of .20%). That works out to $.04 per click (4 cents per click).

Pay per click (PPC) – Some banner advertising services charge per click served. For example, if you pay 100 clicks/credits, your banner ad will be displayed enough times to generate the required number of clicks (100). Kris Clicks charges by the click.
Another way to buy banner advertising is to pay a flat monthly rate. Advertisers usually promote this as “unlimited banner advertising.” There is no guaranteed number of impressions or clicks to be provided on a monthly basis. This is typically done as “best efforts.”
How do banner ads work?
Like any advertising, banner ads work by capturing the attention of the viewer, inducing the viewer to view the banner ad, and take action (click the banner to go to the advertiser’s webpage).
When banners first came out in the 1990’s, banner advertising was a novelty. Consequently, it was effective. However, over time, viewers became indifferent to banner advertising.
Banner adverts are generally served from central ad servers, which are designed for high volume operations. High volume operations are required to deliver larger number of banners ads. The increase in volume reflects the decreasing CTR over time coupled with the decreasing prices of banner advertising.
